The Northern Star is a journal of democracy. Our aim is to develop a politics of national sovereignty for the 21st century, so that the people of Britain and of all nations may take control of their own states. The Northern Star was founded by Philip Cunliffe, George Hoare, Lee Jones and Peter Ramsay with help from Su Karey.
The Northern Star is named after the Chartist newspaper published in Leeds by Feargus O’Connor between 1837 and 1852. That newspaper promoted the cause of the People’s Charter of 1838, the programme of the world’s first mass movement for democracy.
We publish Posts on current events and controversies; Long reads of underlying problems and questions; and Reviews of books that help or hinder the cause of democracy and national sovereignty.
The Northern Star’s editors have co-authored a book Taking Control: Sovereignty and Democracy After Brexit (Polity Books, 2023).
